The information herein is for the genuine psychic or Life in the Spirit (as the term is used herein) member, the latter being telepathy type interactions among the Judeo-Christian religions and similar (i.e. mysticism, union of man and spirit). Life in the Spirit is a deeper experience of God. These pages contain a Novel with a number of themes. The themes put together reflective and contemplative steps. Not all persons will like a particular theme - choose the one you can "imagine". From our main page you may link to specific themes of interest and most religions are catered for. The themes explore paths which can be "mysteries" or "hypotheticals" and which have a high chance of bringing the genuine person "online" to our style of telepathy. From the moment you read this page, you are entering a world parts of which could be fact or fiction - or it could all be true.

Chapter 17 - Extension of Neuro-Psychiatry to the Catholic "Passion" and "Dedication"

IMAGINE the lecture hall as explained in previous sections. This time this is the low level "Life in the Spirit" virtual reality. Images ideal, sometimes close to ordinary life, sometimes more cartoon-like, sometime so different they are impossible to explain (a high quality cartoon so life-like might be the closest comparison).

1.0 "Ladies and Gentlemen, "Darth began, "I am going to use Catholic concepts, belief system, all this, for this presentation. The reason is simply that as a practicing Catholic I can understand very well, it is natural to me, what a dedication and passion is. However, I don't know of any reason why what I am about to present is not universally true, from our neuroscience perspective, for perhaps all religions or walks of life."

1.1 The ID we could say contains some intense pockets of energy - the trauma of childhood if you will. Immense energy as any psychoanalyst knows. Incredibly powerful energy that can cause a mental illness or a crippling mental disability. The ID keeps this, the Superego controls the ID, but the ID whenever it gets a chance will release some of this.

1.2 There is an equivalent intense areas of the brain. These are the areas which contain the intensity of feelings that religious vocation, dedication, passion, commitment can bring about. What do I mean by passion? Well, on my right you see an image of a priest sitting quietly. Images of people in these virtual realities are ideal and the priest might appear about 30. In ordinary life he is retired and well over 80 years of age. Father Franko, shall we name him, had a passion for the slaves of a certain African country. A large township controlled by one multinational who almost gave their workers no money. Every month he would complain. He would end up, in the darkness, being set upon by thugs the company hired. Beaten, often bones in him broken. But he could not be stopped. The moment he recovered he would be back. The Holy Father and some of the Cardinals when they learnt about this had try to talk him out of it, arranging transfers, which he refused always.

Darth walks up a few steps to a female medical student. "Your first impression?"

"Uhm, not being a Catholic I can be honest....obscessive compulsive disorder." The student replied.

"All right. I would agree with you. What is causing it? Some patients when they come to see you when you graduate and have a clinic, those that are mentally ill, they might bring an object with them. You will soon work out if only you could decode the mystery of that object, you might have a key in to the ID. But hold on. If a priest comes to see in his priestly robe. Is he dressed like that out of habit, or are the clothes the very object and the key you need? Or a military person in uniform, whatever."

"It is possible that the ID has caused a passion to counter balance a source of intense dark energy. Sure, but I would not pursue this because in most cases I suspect that is unlikely. Whatever it is that caused that passion, is not of direct interest to me. As a healer, a medico, a neuroscientist, I want to help the person release some of that pent up energy of his passion or dedication."

"I can if the patient trusts me and believes in me. In fact, lying is perhaps compulsory in some situations for a psychiatrist when with a patient. I know, from knowing Catholic conservatism, if I tell this priest that I am a Catholic and my wife and I met at university and she is the only woman I have only ever known sexually, then I will score points with this soul. In a sense I look "clean to him". I don't care if this is not true you see, I am about trying to assist the best I know. Then, I might begin a line of inquiry which helps me to understand how do I score more points with him. My aim is for that passion energy to reveal itself, to express itself somehow. The moment it begins doing that, after a while as the energy flows our of special neural network, an electro-magnetic like field begins to form. That is the field the Ego needs to stick to it like glue. If it can manage to do that, it will literally tame that lovely energy and can absorb it into itself, or keep it when it needs it. For example. In a priest, the energy might be most useful when a priest is consoling a mother who has lost her child. The Ego in a dedicated person like this is not stupid. If it can get hold of such a compact area of the brain, and control it in accordance with its reality principle, the Ego is completely satisfied with the result."

"Now, all right, say I am manipulating for proper clinical reasons, and as ethically as I know how, his soul in a sense, to try and open up. Say I succeed. All right, he will be happy release, may even release some tears. But he is a priest and I am a practicing Catholic and my wife just happens to work in a Catholic business as do her sisters sometimes. The priest might be so grateful he may tell others about me, word might spread, suddenly I may be appearing as some sort of Saint, a healer of priests - ah, but theologically, at the high level, only the Holy Spirit can do that. While it is most unlikely anyone will see me as that, some theologians will put two and two together and their way of thinking, their dedication in faith, might cause them to suddenly have a new intense area in the brain that contains this...this...mystery..as how can a neuroscientist possibly heal a priest unless God is with him. So in helping one Catholic priest, I might be causing problems to ten or twenty theologians down the line."

"I have a solution. Before he lives my clinic, before our session is over, I am going to say something, preferably something true, but if need be I will invent something, that will make me seem less of a Saint - perhaps just a smart alec. I have to be careful about this. I don't want him to loose his confidence in me, or his respect. He may need to come back at another times. I may invent something like, "Father, the stress of this job sometimes, last week I slapped my young son so hard I felt so guilty." This is not true, I never slapped any of my children in their life, but I am not about truth, but am simply following what I believe in all sincerity is the only true professional way to heal some types of people, such as people with dedication. All I am trying to do is release some of that pent up energy that the dedication has caused, so the Ego gets hold of it in a managed and controlled manner."

"Now, next time my patient comes in, he may want to know how I feel about slapping my son. A priest is a priest, if he knows I have a guilt feeling about something, he will try to help me to either be a better parent and not slap my children, or to help me understand why I might have. I have a lovely chance at getting access to the pocket of intense energy I am after. So, in a way, a professional session with a priest is not something clinical ethics can easily prepare you for. Because he is a Catholic and a believer in Jesus, as a I am, I don't have any ethical problems as to what I am trying to do and how to go about it. I might with any other religious group because I don't understand the nature of their passions and it would not come naturally to me to understand how any Catholic, in particular a priest, thinks or feels or understand. That is my strength as a medico, that natural knowledge of my own type of people."

Darth walked to a medic student. "Your thoughts?"

"I approve, I like the approach." The student replied.

Darth turns to a young female student. "Your opinion."

"I think you should be honest." The student replies. "That is more ethical."

Darth walks back down and turns to the student. "All right. And yes, perfect honest is the most ethical approach, however, what is "honesty" to a dedicated Catholic religious? Their belief system and their life, has to do with faith, not truth, not honesty. Sure, if my faith was equal to his own, then I could reason out a way to be perfectly honest in faith.

Darth imagines his Darth Vader like suit on him and turns to the priest, using a divine holy majestic rich flow, "I am the Lord your God."

Darth's suit fades. He walks up and down the row of student. "I can do that because I have something called a Catholic Faith Marriage. You can read about this in our other pages. My faith can reach as high as it needs to, overpower the Priest's faith, and find a way to explain or convey honesty. Any Faith Marriage can do this, the faith between two people can be stronger that in any Catholic Saint. Having said that, out of a billion Catholics there are only about 150 Faith Marriages which suggests to me something needs to be done to improve the number. Be that as it may, what I can do is a temporary effect, extremely draining too, but it can be done for a little while. Faith is relative. To the priest, to that area of dedication, the person, the only person, the only spirit, that has more faith than him, is the Lord his God. I did not use the term Jesus, that is more on a human level."

Darth turned to the young woman who suggested honest. "All right, I was honest, is that ethical? And where did it get me?"

"I have no idea." The young student smiled.

"Let me go back to the basics. No other doctor, no hospital, will allow you to perform cardiac surgery on anyone unless you have the credentials. You know this, I know this, everyone knows this. Simple reality, simple truth in any modern country. In a way, about the only person who ought ever treat a priest using a neuroscientific technique, is someone completely conversant with what they are doing. Now, I am not talking about priests such as, sadly, very sad for most of the Christian community, are suddenly found to have abused children. That is pure psychiatry that is required, not this type of approach. Don't confuse the issue. I do not personally believe that an intense energy caused by a dedication or commitment can form in a brain of a person who has a mental condition - the ID will not allow this, it will draw this energy into itself to try and pacify its intense vaults of horror."

"So," one student raised a hand, "are you saying only a person in a Faith Marriage can do this?"

"No," Darth glanced at the student and smiled and walked back down, "certainly not. It is a technique, like I mentioned before. It is only when you want to be absolutely honest relative to a particular frame of knowledge or belief system, then you need to know what you are doing. Ideally, the Pope, the Catholic head, has all the authority he needs to tell any priest what to do, what not to do. Those who are seriously dedicated are problematic. They tend not to listen - or the may appear to listen but deep inside they are not truly listening. That is because in their reality, the Pope is a figurehead, the hands of Saint Peter but Jesus is the true head of the Catholic Church. There can be variations I guess. So, in some Catholic dedicated people, especially Sisters, they tend to have such a high esteem for the Holy Father he is their best...psychiatrist...in a sense. Does not work in the same way for men."

"Another complexity is something called a Religious Vow. It is as strong a bind on the Ego as...well...an oath of loyalty to a military General. Over time, this vow while initially perhaps spoken aloud in lovely but simple words, takes on a deeper meaning as it develops and matures. To expose the ID in a way that the mouth will utter the vow, it may come out with words like "I am Holy." Think about this. How embarrassing is that - it almost sounds insane, doesn't it. Or, it may come out with "I am the Lord your God." Not even the smartest theologian can be certain how, if for some reason his ID allowed this to express in words, would come out in words. It is that complex a deliberation. That in itself is no obstacle to us - except - that structure in the brain is a childish structure in the sense that it can be easily offended by something you said. So, while all seems to go well with your patient, suddenly you get a phone telling you the priest is no longer interested in being your patient and no one will tell you the reason. Sometimes, if you begin to specialise in this field, that is what will happen. Forget about it. It is impossible for you to have any idea how what you said might have upset that vow. Sure, if you are smart, and have a good rapport with your patient, they may tell you what their vow is - that is how they formulated it in the speech areas of the brain and it can sound simple like a vow of poverty, or a vow of chastity. Our speech areas do not work independently as you all know, both brains cooperate. The intense feelings coming from usually the right, flows in the left, and words come out - but after years of dedication and religious sacrifice and commitment, how this might come out when the ID allows it to be said - might be a surprise to the religious you are dealing with."

"As yet another complexity is something that can be loosely called pregnancy. Those intense energy parcels tend to be either male or female. That is, a dedication might arise out of something the priest or Sister might have loved about Mary, the mother of Jesus, or a female Saint. In which case loosely speaking it is best to view this as a female energy bundle. Male and female energy, in the spirit, literally mates. The perfect way to discharge such in fact. It can only mate when the male energy is in a man, and the female energy is in the woman. Part of the early stages of Life in the Spirit, is the women begin to accept into themselves the female energies formed in a new man coming into the spirit, and vice versa. Then, as faith increases, one man and woman will end up in a Faith Marriage of which there are basically two types. Either a pregnancy in the spirit results, or one in ordinary life. The only known possible Christian pregnancy of this type is Mary and Joseph. Of course, this is not what Catholics believe - but you, as a medico, can relate to this to appreciate how the whole mysterious experience of being a dedicated religious works. I don't know how true it is, I don't mind, if I am a medico my soul purpose is to help. If I can use a construct in my head that helps me to release some of that pent up energy, then I will have a go and learn from my mistakes as I go along."

"My professional opinion is that ideally the powers to be in the Vatican should talk the Holy Father to allow some young priests to enter universities and enroll in medicine for the sole purpose of being a disciple of Saint Luke, the physician who was one of the apostles of Jesus. In a strict sense, as the Holy Ways and Catholic Theologians Faith Path had worked this out in the spirit, Dr Luke was only meant for the Jewish righteous ones, not the Christians, but in the modern complexity of everything, I don't know that this would be so...unorthodox. Some theologians have such a high IQ that passing medicine might seem child's play. That is not an issue in its own self."

"Ideally, to be consistent with modern times, I also don't see a reason why Priests and Sisters should not marry in a Faith Marriage from the beginning. Traditionally, Faith Marriages were only for lay Catholics and not religious - but times are a changing.  That is the reason that a Faith Marriage can generate, temporary, more Faith than a Catholics Saint, because of the struggle of faith involved in such a tradition. There is a traditional hypothetical that two lay Catholics not married to one another in ordinary life but who accept a marriage in the spirit, must talk over face to face - namely should they sleep together. Think about this. The only people in whom this works, is those who are virgins in the spiritual sense meaning each only ever had none or one sexual partner. The "do not commit" adultery commandment in a Catholic and some other religions I guess, is a precept is ever so strong, perhaps even stronger that the oath of loyalty of any military leader. To then sit down together and seriously talk about this, is one hell of an ordeal, a struggle of faith unlike anything else. So an intense bundle of energy builds in both people - the energy of faith. It is not as strong in a sense as in perhaps any priest, but it has the capacity to be intense for a short time. Now, in the Catholic tradition Sisters and Priests and Brothers and Monks are celibates. Maybe not all, but most would be. How easy, how few obstacles, for a young Priest and Sister to sit down and talk over this hypothetical. They have no ties to the flesh, they have no small children, they have no fears of someone finding out that, from other peoples point of view, two lay Catholics who accepted a religious marriage may have committed adultery. That is the reason I would suggest that by all means, this tradition ought to be extended to young Catholic Sisters and Priests. A Faith Marriage is a marriage of faith, not flesh in this sense. There are different...well...ways to approach such a marriage. It is not like an ordinary life marriage but it can lead to a pregnancy."

"If you are a medico to the clergy or the deeply religious, it is not what you believe that counts, it is what a particular person believe that counts. Compare to Jehovah's Witnesses who have a aversion to blood products. If a Witness is your patient and needs say insulin replacement, you know full well the usual medication is made from blood products, so you prescribe an alternative. Your patient is who counts, not what your personal opinion about the validity of the Witness belief system. Same when dealing with a person at the medico level in this way - what they believe, is the key, the clue, to the diagnosis or approach, whatever, but not what you believe."

"Say you are a special psych in religion and two Catholic people come to you and they confess they accepted something they heard about called a Faith Marriage and may have done something for which they feel guilty. An unlikely situation. The Catholic hypothetical is a hypothetical, whether they slept together or not is incidental. It is not meant to actually cause people to be compelled to sleep together. That is a more a personal choice. So, if two people did, out of personal choice, they will never come to you because they will not feel guilty in the same way that two people who might have failed the hypothetical and decided it literally meant two people must have sex. So what do you do if they are your patient? How valid, how holy, how sanctified, a Faith Marriage is, is not your concern - it is what your patient believe that counts. All right, if you are a Catholic also, then you need to work on your technique to mask your own curiousity, but that is not hard for any psychiatrist. Also, they may not spell out exactly what their guilt is because a Faith Marriage is a Sacrament. Neither will tell anyone else if they had, or had not, slept together. So, you, as a professional, may need to deduce this very quickly what the burden could well be, and in truth probably is, and never actually say it unless you have no choice, and find another way to relieve the guilt. For example. Why should two people be bothered by this when Jesus was brutalised by being thrashed with a Roman whip which typically had steel balls at the end of the leather straps and then murdered in a ghastly way. You could relate their act of faith, to much the same as being crucified. Clearly it is nowehere near the same but it can be used to begin to open deeper buried hurts - perhaps about each others marriage to their spouse in ordinary life, perhaps this is the true reason they slept together when they took the cup of Jesus and became a Faith Marriage. There are many ways to look at this. You need to keep your head high and your intelligence low and in a sense in a vault when dealing with such situations."

"I have formed the opinion based on solid and sound deliberations and consideration, or analysis, whatever words you want to use, is that it is impossible for a truly dedicated religious, and I include in this a Faith Marriage couple, to have any traumas of childhood that can cause a serious anchor for the ID. Even severe beatings, as sadly can take place in some families in the early years, are not the sort of thing that would form a trauma type area in the brain that is hidden by the Superego through its control of the ID."

"Personally, but I could be incorrect, I have formed the opinion that some serious psychiatric research needs to be done especially in children with ADD, or attention deficit disorder. I don't know if this is a conincident of random chance, but my daughter is a teacher in a primary school and in her class there are couple of such children and an Sperger's syndrome child. Common denominator seems sad family life. Does the child really have ADD, or is the young brain merely allowing the ID to discharge during class in order to ensure the Ego adjusts? Why diagnose a child with ADD and prescribe medications if the problem is the environment, not the child? Similarly, if say a Catholic Faith MArriage comes to you, and they would insist on being together I should imagine, is the problem, the guilt they may have, due to them, or the conservative perception of religion in ordinary life? Maybe it is just a question of enlightment? In other words, perhaps you need to put on a philosophers hat rather than a medico approach? Judgment calls like these, only you, as a professional, a dedicated professional, can make - who else can? So while I am giving you an overview, please adjust all this should a situation ever arise and you recall something you heard about such things."
